Clearly what we've got as a result doesn't show any kind of independence of thought, but I'd say that's more likely down to his profession than his politics. In many ways it's Clarke's First Law at work: "When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right; when he states that something is impossible, he is probably wrong." the 'impossible' here being that the basis for WCA might be flawed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999633524276247455.post-36756835175776833862010-12-05T16:33:58.238+00:002010-12-05T16:33:58.238+00:00David,
I want to thank you for this.
What I foun...David,

I want to thank you for this.

What I found interesting was that Harrington observed how people had been "abandoned" on incapacity benefits.

This word - "abandoned" - is uttered by Chris Grayling on a regular basis in relation to people on benefits.

A big red marker went up as soon as I saw it. I couldn't help but suspect that Harrington - as you allude to yourself - is perhaps not as impartial as he'd have us believe, and that ultimately his review is a form of toeing the (Conservative) party line.

Of course, this concept of "abandonment" is a complete misnomer: the prospect for most who fail the WCA is a transfer to JSA (and jobseeking in general) and a confrontation with all the obstacles (some mentioned in your post) that go with finding work whilst suffering from a mental or physical illness or disability.

In other words, the solution to help many of those "abandoned" on sickness and disability benefits is to "abandon" them on jobseeking benefits, where their prospects for success in the jobs market are extremely bleak.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999633524276247455.post-59549244588830368072010-12-04T13:23:03.071+00:002010-12-04T13:23:03.071+00:00Yes - very good assessment of the report.
I once ...Yes - very good assessment of the report.

I once had the (mis)fortune to get an honest opinion of my prospects from a potential employer because I made an informal request for work experience. Very harsh news indeed, but at least I didn't waste time applying for an actual job there after that... (nothing much for me to apply for elsewhere either, but that was beside the point...)

In terms of "work is good for you", they always miss out the bit from that paper (whose name I can't recall at the moment) that the quote is actually "*good* work is good for you".

As someone who is a wheelchair user (so would score ESA points even though the process doesn't really realise the difficulty I have in obtaining employment is mainly to do with the employers and their buildings and not my "medical" condition) long-term unemployment had a detrimental effect on my my mental health and getting a good job was good for me, but these days my job is often not good and again my mental health is struggling, so there you have it...SQnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999633524276247455.post-20678507675948247512010-12-04T00:08:10.052+00:002010-12-04T00:08:10.052+00:00Thanks for a great post David.
All the profession...Thanks for a great post David.

All the professionals who claim 'work is good for you' don't seem to notice that they have considerable advantages over people less powerful.

Work maybe good for them, but they probably have a good job that they enjoy doing, don't work for a bullying tyrant or colleagues and even if they did it, is far easier for them to go and find another workplace than it is for the general healthy population, nevermind the disabled.

It wouldn't be much of a exageration to say that most of the population tolerate their jobs at best, with the vast majority, especially at the lower end actively hating it.Euripidesnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999633524276247455.post-67660461477894357042010-12-03T19:05:45.342+00:002010-12-03T19:05:45.342+00:00Paying ATOS for a 'medical assesment' is a...Paying ATOS for a 'medical assesment' is a waste of tax payers money - they are about as medically trained as my cat!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999633524276247455.post-82269372291043866722010-12-03T17:38:49.141+00:002010-12-03T17:38:49.141+00:00We also need to write to every employer up and dow...We also need to write to every employer up and down the country and being open about our individual disability whether Mental or physical and get honest responses as to the prospects of consideration they would have on taking on a disabled person towards the volume that claim today.
